Bank Mandiri was established on October 2, 1998, as part of a restructuring program implemented by the government of Indonesia. In July 1999, four state banks - the Bank Bumi Daya, Bank Dagang Negara, Bank Export Import Indonesia and Indonesia Development Bank - merged into Bank Mandiri. Each of the four legacy banks played an integral role in the economic development of Indonesia. At that time, we closed 194 branch offices are close together and rationalizing the number of employees of the combined amount of 26 600 to 17 620. Since its founding, Bank Mandiri continues to increase the performance seen from the increasing profit of Rp 1.18 trillion in 2000 to reach USD 5.3 trillion in 2004. In addition, the bank also recorded notable achievements by conducting an initial public offering on July 14, 2003 by 20% or equivalent to 4 billion shares.

In 2005, Bank Mandiri had problems that result in reduced performance of the bank. One is the increase in problem loans, reflected by the ratio of Non Performing Loans (NPLs) that consolidated net increase of 1.60% in 2004 to 15.34% in 2005. This direct impact on the earnings of Bank Mandiri significantly from Rp 5.3 trillion in 2004 to Rp 603 billion in 2005 or a decline of about 80%. In terms of investor confidence in the stock, Bank Mandiri's stock price also dropped from Rp 2050 to January 2005 up to the level of USD 1110 in November 2005.
