INPEX is currently carrying out oil and natural gas projects through its group companies involved in more than 70 projects across 26 countries.
Since its establishment in February 1966, INPEX has been expanding its exploration and development activities in Indonesia as one of its international business core areas. Currently, INPEX along with its strategic partners is participating in five production blocks, three development blocks and three exploration blocks.
During the 46-year existence in Indonesia, INPEX has invested in over 20 exploration projects in Indonesia, including five offshore blocks operated by INPEX, namely North Aceh, North East Madura, Rabe, Masela, and Babar Selaru.
INPEX Corporation discovered the Abadi gas field in 2000 located in Arafura Sea, 150-km offshore of Saumlaki, the capital city of Maluku Tenggara Barat Regency, Maluku Province. Since then, six appraisal wells were drilled within Abadi gas field and confirmed the natural gas reserves which were sufficient for the large-scale LNG development.
In 2010, the Indonesian Government approved the plan of development that the Abadi field will be developed in phases and that one Floating LNG plant will be constructed and utilized for an annual LNG production of 2,5 million ton for the first phase development. Through participation in Masela Block and beyond, INPEX will further expand its exploration, development and production activities in Indonesia.
INPEX has committed to long-term investment in Indonesia upstream oil and gas sector since 46 years ago, to contribute to Indonesia economy and to provide energy for a bright future in Indonesia.
INPEX has been granted the approval of the Indonesian Government to acquire the 100% participating interest in the Babar Selaru Block on November 2011. As the operator, INPEX will conduct exploration activity. Thus, it expands INPEX operation in Indonesia.
The Block is located 100km southwest of the Saumlaki City in Tanimbar Islands, covers 8,170km2 with a water depth ranging from 200m to 2000m, and approximately 60km northwest of the Abadi gas field in the Masela Block, Arafura sea, Maluku Province, Indonesia.
INPEX Corporation collaborates with JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) in this project. Both institutions conducted a joint study for oil and gas exploration in the prospective area in the Eastern part of Indonesia in December 2009, with the permission given by the Indonesian Government. INPEX and JOGMEC further conducted a two-dimensional seismic survey and other exploratory studies until December 2010. Based on the findings of this joint study, the Indonesian Government designated the "Babar Selaru Block" as a potential oil and gas exploration area, which was then offered as one of the open bidding blocks in the Indonesian First Bidding Round 2011.
In order to develop Masela Project, INPEX now is working closely with Shell Upstream Overseas Services (I) Limited, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell). Both were signed the agreement in 2011 and Shell hold 30% participating interest of the Masela Block which is located 3,221km2 in a water depth ranging from 300m to 1000m in the Arafura Sea, Indonesia.
Based on the technical characteristics of the Abadi Project in Masela Block, INPEX considers it is vital to have a strategic partner among major oil and gas companies which has sufficient expertise and experiences of LNG business and, in particular, of large scale offshore gas development activities.
